About The Enon Ridge

 

Enon Ridge is a community in the Smithfield Community, located on approximately 180 acres immediately northwest of "Malfunction Junction" and south of Village Creek, east of 1st Street North. The Enon Ridge geographical formation divides Jones Valley to the south from Opossum Valley to the north.

Enon Ridge, formerly known as "Black Bottom," was developed in the mid-nineteenth century and became one of the primarily residential areas for African-American professionals in the first half of the 20th century. Enon Ridge has been home to musician Erskine Hawkins, social worker, and educator Carrie Tuggle, Birmingham World editor Emory Jackson, and undertaker C. M. Harris, among other notable residents.
