5 Considerations Before You Clean Your Green Pool

Cleaning a green pool is not an easy task. It can be frustrating, time-consuming, and expensive if you hire a professional to do it for you. Before you decide to clean your green pool, there are 5 important things you need to consider. In this blog post, we will discuss those 5 considerations and help you make the best decision for your swimming pool.

5 Considerations Before You Clean Your Green Pool

1. Examine The Situation: Do You Need to Drain It?

The first thing you need to do is examine the situation. Sometimes, the green pool isn't actually a result of algae growth, but rather, it's caused by something else like dirt or debris. If this is the case, then draining your pool may not be necessary. However, if you're sure that the green color is due to algae, then you'll need to take further steps.

If you're unsure about whether or not you need to drain your pool, it's best to speak with a pool maintenance technician or other professional for help determining what the problem is. If there are issues that need to be addressed before draining the pool and cleaning the algae growth away, then they'll be able to let you know so that you can get started on fixing those problems first.

2. Check The Ph Levels

Check the ph level for your pool and make sure it is between 5.0- 5. 5 so that the chlorine can be more effective in killing off bacteria, algae, and viruses. The higher or lower range will cause the chlorine to not work properly as well as create an imbalance in how long you have before needing to add more chemicals again.

3. Time For Shock ‘n Awe

If your pool is looking like something out of a horror movie, it’s time to take some drastic measures and shock ‘n awe it back into shape. Add 5-gallons of chlorine for every 5,000 gallons of water in your pool and watch the magic happen. Be sure to test the pH levels before you add any chemicals, as adding alkalinity too high can actually make things worse. Once the pH levels are correct, let the shocking begin!

Keep an eye on things over the next few hours – if the chlorine level drops below 5 ppm (parts per million), add more until it reaches that level again. And don’t forget to keep scrubbing while you wait; nothing spoils the effect of a good shock like a layer of scum on the surface.

4. Allow The Filter To Do The Work

The filter is responsible for trapping debris and cleaning the water. By allowing it to do its job, you'll minimize the amount of work required from you.

If your pool is green, there's a good chance that the filter is clogged with algae. Cleaning or replacing the filter can help clear up your pool quickly.

Algae thrive in environments with high pH levels. By balancing pH levels, you make your pool less hospitable to algae growth. You can use muriatic acid to lower the pH levels of baking soda to raise them.

5. Proactive Final Step: Kill And Flocculate

If your pool is still green after following the previous four steps, it's time to take more aggressive action. Add an algaecide to kill the algae and a flocculant to help it clump together so that it can be vacuumed out of the pool.

Keep in mind that these are just five general considerations when cleaning a green pool. For specific instructions on how to clean your particular pool, consult your local pool store or swimming pool cleaning services.
